The American Academy Of Dermatology recently polled that 3,800 girls and women between the ages of 14 and 22 are pursuing and or considering tans via tanning beds. The poll is disturbing to Dermatologists who have repeatedly warned of the risk of skin cancer through the use of tanning beds. Dr. Susana Khouri explains “education is a crucial step in lowering the rate of skin cancer in young women”. The Department of Health and Human Services has made it clear, ultraviolet rays whether from the sun or by tanning lamps are dangerous and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
The Academy Of Dermatology has found that tanning salons can increase a person’s chances of melanoma by a staggering 75%. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer affecting young women today. UV radiation is the primary culprit in increasing skin cancer however more teens continue to tan. Another Survey in more than 116 cities has concluded that tanning salons are more prevalent than previously thought. According to the survey there are more tanning salons than Starbucks or McDonald’s. With this new data The American Academy Of Dermatology paint a dark picture. If the current trend does not change Dermatologists calculate 1 in 5 Americans will develop Melanoma in their lifetime.
